Sand Casting is one of the oldest methods in metal casting. But it is still widely used today. Not only can sand casting make those big and heavy machinery components, it also can be used to make small parts with precision.

Process

Although this process is quite longer compared with Die Casting, it used to produce metal components require less quantity and less surface smoothness.

The first step of sand casting is to make molds. Put the exact pattern in the container that is also known as the flask. Then use sand (mixed with clays and other bonding agent) to fully surround the pattern. Why use sand? Because sand can tolerate the high temperature of molten metal and also can be easily taken off after the metal solidifies. In this way, the sand is made to shape into the pattern and called the mold. The mold is typically produced in two pieces, the top half called the cope and the bottom half called drag. Once the sand is compacted, the pattern inside will be removed and what left is a hollow cavity waiting for the pouring of the molten metal.

After the mold is well prepared, workers are ready to pour the molten metal into the sand cavity and waiting for the desired shape. When the metal solidifies, the sand will be removed, and the casting will be taken out. The casting will be sent to finishing process and the sand will be reused for another sand casting.
